Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT)
A REIT is a company that owns, operates, or finances income-producing properties. REITs generate a steady income stream for investors but offer little in the way of capital appreciation.
Private Equity
Firms buy companies and overhaul them to earn a profit when the business is sold
again. Capital for the acquisitions comes from outside investors in the private equity funds the firms establish and manage, usually supplemented by debt. It tends to be most popular when stock prices are high and interest rates low.
Hedge Funds
Actively managed alternative investments that commonly use risky investment strategies. This form of investment requires a high minimum investment or net worth from accredited investors.
Commodities
A basic good used in commerce that is interchangeable with other commodities of the same type. Commodities are often used as inputs in the production of other goods or services. Investors can buy and sell commodities directly in the spot (cash) market or via derivatives such as futures and options.

Variable Annuity
A value based on the performance of an underlying portfolio of sub accounts selected by the annuity owner. Variable annuities offer the possibility of higher returns and greater income than fixed annuities, but there’s also a risk that the account will fall in value.
Fixed Annuity
Insurance contracts that pay a guaranteed rate of interest on the account owner's contributions. The earnings in a fixed annuity are tax deferred until the owner begins receiving income from the annuity.
Equity Indexed Annuities
A fixed annuity where the rate of interest is linked to the returns of a stock index, such as the S&P 500. Equity-indexed annuities may appeal to moderately conservative investors.
Cash Value Life Insurance
Permanent life insurance policies like whole life or universal life can accumulate cash value over time. Policyholders may borrow against or withdrawal from a cash value life insurance policy.
Market-linked CDs
A type of certificate of deposit that’s based on a market index, a basket of equities or a combination of the two. This determines the returns you can see from the CD.
